Karavanke UNESCO Global Geopark information centre in Mežica is an important added value of the Geopark Karavanke and, at the same time, a for the tourist mine and museum as well. With the multi-purpose space, it now represents the starting point for visiting the mine, and also provides all the information about the Geopark Karavanke in one place. The establishment of the new information centre also helped to preserve an important part of the mining heritage of Mežica mine (Rudnik Mežica), i.e. the electro-mechanical workshops which are protected as a cultural and technical monument. The information centre is located in one of the former workshops, which includes a fully preserved forge from 1926. The renovated forge remained in its original place, and visitors can also view all the associated blacksmithing tools. On special occasions, the blacksmith has a live presentation for visitors on how mining objects were forged in the past.
The original building was damaged in a fire. As part of the reconstruction after the fire, the building was not restored to its original appearance; previous industrial roof was made flat. As part of the establishment of the information centre, the building was restored to its original appearance with a stepped roof.
